Former President Donald Trump has thanked Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, his erstwhile rival for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination, for raising money for his campaign.
During an fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago on the evening of April 11 that followed a day of campaigning, Trump made special mention of DeSantis’ pledge. According to the presumptive GOP nominee for the 2024 presidential election, the Florida governor reportedly pledged to raise money for Trump’s upcoming battle with President Joe Biden.
“Today, I heard very nice things. I heard he’s going to campaign very hard for me. And he’s going to raise a lot of money for me,” said Trump. “Ron, we like you. Welcome back.”
NBC News earlier reported that DeSantis would be fundraising for the former president ahead of the 2024 election in November. Prior to the April 11 fundraiser, the Sunshine State’s chief executive had already told donors and supporters of his intentions to campaign and raise funds for Trump in a private event. An advisor to DeSantis attested to this development, adding that the retreat happened at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in South Florida.
“He did say it in front of a group of people at the Hard Rock,” they remarked. The advisor moreover remarked that when DeSantis withdrew from the presidential race, he reportedly pledged to support GOP candidates running for positions across different levels of government. This commitment is something he fully intends to uphold, beginning with his support of Trump.
DeSantis withdrew in January to clear the way for Trump
Back in January, DeSantis dropped out of the presidential race after the Iowa caucuses alongside entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. The Florida governor immediately endorsed Trump after his withdrawal, announcing both developments in a video shared on social media.

“[Trump] has my endorsement because we can’t go back to the old [GOP] guard of yesteryear, a repackaged form of warmed-over corporatism that [former South Carolina Gov.] Nikki Haley represents,” DeSantis said at the time. “I signed a pledge to support the GOP nominee and I will honor that pledge.”
Speculation had been rife about DeSantis’ potential bid for the presidency, with many considering him a formidable challenger to the 45th president seeking a second term. But the Florida governor’s withdrawal in January, coupled with Haley’s withdrawal following her dismal Super Tuesday results, paved the way for Trump to clinch the party’s nomination.
DeSantis also acknowledged the improbability of his victory in the video and threw his support behind Trump, something that caught many off guard. “It’s clear to me that a majority of GOP primary voters want to give Trump another chance,” the Florida governor said, putting on a cheerful demeanor.
Over the past year, Trump and his campaign team have engaged in a relentless campaign of taunting DeSantis, targeting everything from his physical stature to his dietary choices and even his personality. Adding to the tension, a number of DeSantis’ former staffers have transitioned to roles within Trump’s camp, further intensifying the rivalry between the two Republican figures.
