• Despite ICE issuing a detainer for Zapeta-Calil, New York City’s sanctuary policies prevent local authorities from cooperating with federal immigration enforcement. Critics argue such policies endanger public safety by protecting individuals with criminal histories.

A 20-year-old illegal immigrant is now facing charges of second-degree murder after authorities say he fatally beat his two-month-old daughter.

On March 7, Nassau County police responded to a home in Inwood for a report of a choking infant named Liseyda Rabanales Barrios just after 10:30 a.m.

Emergency responders rushed the two-month-old girl to a local hospital, where she was later transferred to another facility for further treatment. Despite medical efforts, the infant succumbed to her injuries.

But after an autopsy and subsequent investigation was conducted, it was revealed that Liseyda had suffered severe physical abuse, including abrasions, broken bones and other injuries from his father, Marlon Rabanales-Pretzantzin. Detectives determined that the injuries were the result of an assault, leading to her death.

Rabanales-Pretzantzin, originally from Guatemala, was arrested March 12 following a harrowing investigation into the death of his daughter.

“He admitted to us what had happened with the baby, how he abused it physically, how he felt the child wasn’t his and how he did not respect or want that child,” Nassau County Police Detective Capt. Stephen Fitzpatrick said, during a press briefing, detailing the chilling confession of Rabanales-Pretzantzin. “He hit the child several times around the head and face. He threw the child on the ground.”

Rabanales-Pretzantzin lived in the home with the 20-year-old mother of his children, who authorities believe was not involved in the abuse. A one-year-old boy was also removed from the home and taken to a hospital for evaluation. Officials have not disclosed whether the toddler sustained any injuries.

He was arraigned in Nassau County Court the next day and is being held without bail.

Illegal immigrant charged for setting a woman on fire

Meanwhile, another illegal from Guatemala is facing charges for setting a woman on fire. Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, another Guatemalan national, has been charged with setting a woman ablaze while she slept on a subway train last December. The 33-year-old Guatemalan is accused of murder and arson in the horrific Dec. 22, 2022, attack at Brooklyn’s Coney Island subway station. According to authorities, he allegedly doused 57-year-old Debrina Kawam with a flammable liquid and set her ablaze while she slept. Witnesses reported that Zapeta-Calil fanned the flames with a shirt to intensify the fire before calmly observing the scene from a platform bench. Kawam, a mother and grandmother, succumbed to her injuries days later.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials confirmed that Zapeta-Calil entered the U.S. illegally in 2018, was deported, and later re-entered the country at an unknown time. Before his arrest, he was living in a Brooklyn shelter and working as a roofer.

But despite ICE issuing a detainer request for Zapeta-Calil, the New York City Department of Corrections has refused to honor it, citing the city’s sanctuary policies. These laws limit local law enforcement’s cooperation with federal immigration authorities, aiming to foster trust between immigrant communities and police.

However, critics argue that such policies endanger public safety by shielding individuals with criminal histories from deportation.
