Biden allocates an additional $306 million to address the bird flu “outbreak” right before leaving office
- In its last few days, the administration of President Joe Biden has allocated an additional $306 million taxpayer dollars to address the H5N1 avian influenza outbreak.
- The funds will go to pandemic preparedness, vaccine development and enhanced monitoring of current outbreaks.
- The funds include $183 million for state and local pandemic preparedness, $103 million for enhanced monitoring of current outbreaks, $8 million for manufacturing bird flu tests and $11 million for bird flu research and vaccine development.
- The administration is planning to develop a new vaccine against bird flu using mRNA technology.
In its final days, the administration of President Joe Biden has allocated $306 million to address the ongoing H5N1 avian influenza outbreak, commonly referred to as bird flu.
This funding, described as “critical” by officials, is intended to bolster pandemic preparedness, develop a new vaccine and enhance monitoring efforts. However, the timing and necessity of this allocation raise questions about whether this is a genuine effort to protect public health or a last-minute political move by an outgoing administration.
The H5N1 virus, a highly pathogenic strain of bird flu, has allegedly been spreading among poultry and wild birds, with sporadic cases reported in humans. While the risk to the general public remains low, the potential for the virus to mutate and spread more easily between humans has scientists and health officials on edge.
The Biden administration’s response includes $183 million for pandemic preparedness at state and local levels, $103 million for monitoring exposed individuals, $8 million for test manufacturing and $11 million for research on combating the virus. Biden administration wants to solve the bird flu “outbreak” with mRNA “vaccines”
At the heart of this plan is the development of a new vaccine. The administration has hinted that this vaccine will likely use mRNA technology, the same platform used for the most widely used Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines.
While mRNA vaccines were groundbreaking during the pandemic, their long-term safety and efficacy remain subjects of debate. Critics argue that the rapid rollout of COVID-19 vaccines, coupled with reports of adverse effects, has eroded public trust in such technologies.
The question now is whether another mRNA-based vaccine is necessary or if alternative approaches should be explored.
The timing of this funding is particularly noteworthy. With the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump set to take office in just a few days, it is unclear whether his fiscally conservative government will keep these costly initiatives in place.
Regardless, the $306 million has already been appropriated, meaning it can’t be legally reversed. However, the new administration could order health officials to redirect these resources or deprioritize the response to the bird flu outbreak altogether.
Meanwhile, some so-called public health experts have praised the Biden administration’s last minute allocation. Megan Ranney of the Yale School of Public Health claimed that this new money will emphasize the importance of preparedness as a primary response to disease outbreaks. She further expressed hope that the new administration would support ongoing monitoring and response efforts. However, she also noted that earlier, more aggressive action could have mitigated the current outbreak.
The Biden administration has already spent approximately $1.8 billion on bird flu response efforts, with the majority going to the Department of Agriculture to address outbreaks in animals.
Only $360 million of that total was directed toward human health, making this new allocation a significant increase. Critics argue that this disproportionate focus on animal health has left human health systems underprepared, and the new funding may be too little, too late.
