President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that would suspend the physical entry of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Trump emphasized the federal government’s constitutional obligation to protect the states against invasion, as stated in Article IV, Section 4 of the U.S. Constitution. He pointed out that the Great State of Texas and others have repeatedly requested federal intervention to address the surge in illegal immigration, but their pleas fell on deaf ears during the previous administration.
The executive order, which took immediate effect, will empower federal agencies to repel and remove individuals attempting unauthorized entry into the United States.
“Through the exercise of his authority under the Immigration and Nationality Act and the Constitution of the United States, President Trump is authorizing and directing the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice and the Department of State to take all necessary action to immediately repel, repatriate and remove illegal aliens across the southern border of the United States,” the order read.
The executive order also places significant limitations on access to asylum claims for individuals attempting to cross the southern border illegally as illegal immigration costs our country billions of dollars each year. “This is a critical step in safeguarding the integrity of our nation’s borders and ensuring the safety of American citizens,” the president said.
The executive order represents a significant escalation in the administration’s efforts to control the southern border, a campaign promise that Trump made in 2024 to “seal the border on Day 1.”
Trump deploys approximately 1,500 active-duty U.S. troops to the southern border
In conjunction with the executive order, Trump ordered the deployment of approximately 1,500 active-duty U.S. troops to the southern border of the United States.
The deployment, which includes 1,000 Army soldiers and 500 Marines, aims to assist in the deportation of migrants and the construction of barriers along the border. The Department of Defense will also provide aircraft to transport up to 5,000 immigrants detained in California and Texas out of the country. Additionally, the Pentagon will support the construction of temporary and permanent barriers to deter illegal border crossings and illicit trafficking.
Soldiers and Marines are currently aiding in border missions through Title 10 federal orders and were already on standby.
The soldiers, under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Northern Command, are usually deployed for civil emergencies or natural disasters. The Marines, who were prepared to respond to wildfires in Los Angeles, California, were redirected to support the southern border mission before they could be called to assist with the fires.
Officials revealed in a press briefing on Jan. 22 that the deployments are just the beginning of what is expected to be an expanding mission.
