Properly Declaring Firearms for Air Travel is Key to Avoiding Trouble

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reported intercepting 6,678 firearms at airport security checkpoints in 2024, with a staggering 94% of them loaded. While this marks a slight decrease from the 6,737 firearms stopped in 2023, TSA officials continue to emphasize the importance of properly packing and declaring firearms when traveling by air.

TSA Administrator David Pekoske reiterated the agency’s stance:

“One firearm at a checkpoint is too many. Firearms present a safety risk for our employees and everyone else at the checkpoint. It’s also costly and slows down operations.”

The Consequences of Improper Firearm Transport

When a firearm is detected at a security checkpoint, TSA immediately contacts local law enforcement. Depending on state and local laws, the passenger may face arrest or be issued a citation. TSA also enforces civil penalties of up to $14,950 and revokes TSA PreCheck® eligibility for at least five years. Additionally, offenders are subjected to enhanced screening, which can significantly delay their travel.

How to Travel with Firearms the Right Way

For lawful gun owners who plan to fly with their firearms, it’s crucial to follow TSA’s “Prepare, Pack, Declare”protocol:

1. Firearms must be unloaded.
2. They must be locked in a hard-sided case.
3. They must be declared to the airline at the check-in counter.
4. They must be transported in checked baggage.
