LAS VEGAS, NV (2-minute read) — Las Vegas police have identified the man accused of opening fire inside the Las Vegas Athletic Club last Friday as 34-year-old Daniel Ortega, a North Las Vegas resident. The tragic event resulted in the death of a longtime gym employee and injuries to at least three other individuals.
According to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), Ortega’s shooting spree was interrupted due to a firearm malfunction, which may have saved numerous lives. Assistant Sheriff Jamie Prosser stated in a Monday press conference, “Fortunately, [Ortega] had a malfunction in his weapon which saved this from becoming a mass casualty event.”
Quick Police Action Prevents Greater Tragedy
LVMPD officers were able to observe Ortega through the gym’s windows. While he was no longer actively shooting when police arrived, officers positioned themselves tactically and took action as soon as they had a clear line of sight. Prosser emphasized that had Ortega still been firing, officers would have entered immediately to neutralize the threat.
Ortega was shot by police as he exited the facility, and he was found carrying extra magazines and ammunition, indicating a preparedness for prolonged violence. The firearm’s jam may have played a critical role in stopping him before more harm was done.
Public records reveal Ortega has a past criminal history, including charges for DUI and drug trafficking dating back to 2013. While the DUI was dismissed, he completed community service for the drug offense.
Although Ortega was a member of the gym, LVMPD has found no direct connection between him and the deceased victim. Police have acknowledged speculation surrounding his motives, but confirmed the investigation is ongoing.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of situational awareness, and the need for citizens to be prepared to defend themselves in life or death situations.
Safety Tip: Always know your surroundings when entering a public space, especially large venues like gyms or malls. Situational awareness is a critical first line of defense in any potential threat scenario.
