Trump calls for Fed Gov. Lisa Cook to resign amid mortgage allegations

President Donald Trump has called for the immediate resignation of Fed Gov. Lisa Cook following allegations related to her past mortgage activity.
Cook, who was appointed to the Fed’s Board of Governors in 2022 by former President Joe Biden, has been accused of mortgage fraud for signing two mortgage agreements in mid-2021. Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director Bill Pulte wrote a letter to Atty. Gen. Pam Bondi and Department of Justice (DOJ) official Ed Martin on Aug. 15, urging the two to investigate Cook over the home loans.
The letter, which includes documents about the home loans, alleges that Cook took a $203,000 mortgage on a property in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on June 18, 2021, agreeing to use the home as her primary residence for at least one year. But by July 2, she signed a second mortgage, this time for $540,000, on a home in Georgia, which also included a clause requiring it to be her primary residence. The referral also includes a 2022 rental listing for the Georgia property, raising questions about whether Cook ever intended to reside there full-time.
Pulte alleged that this dual claim amounts to mortgage fraud, stating in his letter that Cook may have “acquired mortgages that do not meet certain lending requirements” and potentially “received favorable loan terms under fraudulent circumstances.” (Related: President Trump accuses California Sen. As of now, no charges have been filed against Cook and it remains unclear whether Bondi will open a formal investigation. But Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that “Cook must resign, now!!!”
Trump eyes fed overhaul with the potential exit of Cook to take GOP control
Cook, who became who runs her term through 2038, faced a contentious confirmation process that was narrowly approved with former Vice President Kamala Harris casting the tie-breaking vote. Conservatives previously challenged aspects of her academic record, which she defended as accurate.

With Cook gone, Trump could solidify a Republican-leaning majority on the board. Trump has made no secret of his desire to push the Fed toward more aggressive rate cuts and has sharply criticized Fed Chair Jerome Powell, calling him “too late” in social media posts and demanding his resignation.
