New York Governor Kathy Hochul has officially endorsed far-left Democrat candidate Zohran Mamdani in his campaign to become New York City’s next mayor. He is the favorite in a crowded race that includes Democrat-turned-independent and current Mayor Eric Adams, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.
Hochul joined a growing list of Democrats who have endorsed Mamdani, including Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, and Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar. The governor made her endorsement in an op-ed published in The New York Times. She attacked President Donald Trump in her endorsement by stating that she “needed to know the next mayor will not be someone who would surrender one inch” to the president.
Trump responded to Hochul’s endorsement of Mamdani in a post on Truth Social.
“Governor Kathy Hochul of New York has Endorsed the ‘Liddle’ Communist,’ Zohran Mamdani, running for Mayor of New York,” the President said. “This is a rather shocking development, and a very bad one for New York City. How can such a thing happen? Washington will be watching this situation very closely. No reason to be sending good money after bad! President DJT.”
The New York Post reported that Hochul likely endorsed Mamdani to unite the Democrat Party’s far-left base in her state. The newspaper specifically reported that Lt. Governor Antonio Delgado was “gaining ground on her” in the Democrat primary in the gubernatorial race – placing added pressure on Hochul to shore up her support among her left-wing base.
In a post on Monday, New York Rep. Elise Stefanik stated that Hochul endorsed “the antisemite Communist who the majority of NYC voters oppose.” She added to her sentiments in a later post on Monday night.
“Families across New York State want safety, a secure border, and sanity,” Stefanik said. “The Worst Governor in America @KathyHochul gives them Commie Mamdani – defund cops, higher taxes, open borders, no jails. Criminals and illegal first, New Yorkers LAST.”
As AMAC Newsline previously reported, Mamdani won the Democrat primary in the NYC mayoral race by defeating Cuomo and a host of other challengers. Mamdani ran on a platform of freezing rent, creating city-owned grocery stores, turning New York into a “LGBTQIA+ sanctuary city,” and protecting illegal aliens from deportation. In 2020, he stated that “queer liberation means defund the police.”
Mamdani is a migrant from Africa who only became a citizen in 2018. He has publicly made anti-Israel statements, including previously defending the chant “globalize the intifada.” This is widely recognized as a call for genocide against Jews and the destruction of Israel. Mamdani also had a failed rapping career where he “rapped about his ‘love’ for Hamas terror-funding group ‘Holy Land Five.’”
Peter Navarro, who currently serves as Senior Counselor to the President for Trade and Manufacturing, also accused Mamdani of holding dangerous views in a post on X last week.
“Mamdani is nothing more than a con man – a communist positioning himself as a moderate, evoking the ghost of Hugo Chávez,” Navarro said. “The son of a Columbia professor who admitted benefiting from ‘nepotism,’ he calls himself a socialist while living in cosseted privilege.”
Mamdani has a healthy lead in the latest RealClearPolitics polling average, pulling in 43 percent of the vote compared to Cuomo’s 25.2 percent. Sliwa is sitting at 14.4 percent, while Adams comes in fourth at just 8.8 percent.
