9 people were killed and 25+ injured following a mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia on February 10, 2026. The B.C. RCMP are currently investigating the active shooter incident, which prompted a regional emergency alert and the evacuation of the small community’s secondary and elementary schools.

TUMBLER RIDGE, B.C. (4-minute read) — The small, close-knit community of Tumbler Ridge was shattered on Tuesday afternoon by a mass shooting that has left 9 people dead and at least 25 injured. B.C. RCMP received reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School at approximately 1:20 p.m.. The incident prompted an immediate response from neighboring detachments, the North District Emergency Response Team, and STARs air ambulance.

Upon arrival, officers discovered six individuals deceased inside the school. The suspected shooter was also found dead from what investigators believe to be a self-inflicted injury. While three victims were airlifted to a regional hospital with life-threatening injuries, one tragically died during transport. Approximately 25 other individuals are currently being assessed for non-life-threatening injuries at a local medical center.

Two other deceased victims were found in a residence.

Jurisdictional Response and Suspect Identification

During the height of the crisis, a public alert was sent to mobile devices across the Peace River region, describing the suspect as a “female in a dress with brown hair”. The alert, which warned residents to shelter in place and lock their doors, was canceled at approximately 5:45 p.m. after police determined there were no outstanding suspects.

Peace River South MLA Larry Neufeld and Public Safety Minister Nina Krieger have expressed their deep condolences to the community, which has a population of just over 2,000 people. The Peace River South School District has initiated a reunification process for families, and mental health supports are being deployed to assist the students and staff who were evacuated from the secondary and elementary schools.

Safety Tip: In an active shooter situation, the “Run, Hide, Fight” protocol is the international standard for survival. If you can safely evacuate, do so immediately and leave your belongings behind. If evacuation is impossible, find a secure room, lock the door, and silence your phone.
