Experts: China’s Air-Launched Hypersonic Glide Vehicle Poses New Threat to U.S. Aircraft
China has developed and likely tested a new air-to-air hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV) capable of striking support aircraft from beyond visual range, according to defense analysts.
The weapon significantly extends the reach of Chinese air power, allowing it to target command, refueling, and electronic warfare planes near U.S. bases. The development comes as the U.S. faces missile inventory shortages following operations in the Middle East.
The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has added air-to-air capability to existing hypersonic cruise missiles and fitted others with anti-ship warheads, according to a Bloomberg report cited by analysts. Attached to a DF-17 ballistic missile, the HGV’s range is about 1,500 miles. With the DF-27, the range extends to roughly 5,000 miles, potentially reaching Hawaii, according to defense specialists.
Capabilities and Launch Platform
The HGV detaches from a ballistic missile, then glides at speeds exceeding Mach 5 while performing evasive maneuvers, analysts said. According to a report from the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), China may have already deployed a hypersonic missile system capable of striking American bases in the region. DIA chief scientist Paul Freisthler informed a House Armed Services subcommittee that China has been developing an intercontinental ballistic missile tipped with a hypersonic glide warhead since 2014, and by 2021 this capability had likely reached initial operational status. Senior War Department officials told lawmakers in April 2026 that the U.S. has no effective defense against hypersonic and cruise missiles developed by China and Russia. Ground-launched missiles lack the maneuverability of an air-launched HGV, which can change course mid-flight, analysts noted. The new capability could shift the power balance in any future conflict over Taiwan or elsewhere in the Pacific.
