Choosing a shampoo, lotion or household cleaner can feel like a small decision. You read the label, avoid ingredients you don’t want and perhaps pay extra for words like “natural,” “non-toxic” or “phthalate-free.”

But a closer look at what’s actually inside the bottle suggests those labels may not tell the whole story.

A new analysis of everyday personal care and cleaning products found that nearly all of the products tested contained at least one chemical not disclosed on the label. More concerning, most contained an undisclosed chemical with a known or suspected health hazard.

That doesn’t mean every product on your bathroom shelf is dangerous. But it does challenge the idea that an ingredient list, even a careful one, can fully protect you from unwanted exposure.

More chemicals than the label reveals

Researchers at the Million Marker Research Institute tested 113 personal care and cleaning products across 12 categories. The products included shampoos, sunscreens, lotions, baby-care items, soaps, deodorants, toothpaste, mouthwash, oils and household cleaners.

Instead of looking only for a preselected list of chemicals, they used nontargeted chemical analysis. Think of it as casting a much wider net: the method searches for chemical signals that would be missed by tests focused only on known ingredients.

The average label listed 16 ingredients. Yet lab testing detected an average of 51 chemicals per product.

Across all samples, researchers detected 3,141 chemical signals and identified 303 compounds with confirmed, probable or tentative confidence. In 98% of the products, at least one detected chemical was not listed on the label. And 85% contained at least one undisclosed chemical classified as having a known or suspected health hazard.

“Natural” is not a laboratory test

One of the study’s most useful reminders is that marketing language and chemical testing are not the same thing.

Researchers found synthetic chemicals in some products marketed as “100% natural.” They also found examples of fragrance chemicals, phthalates, parabens, silicones or oxybenzone in products advertised as free of those substances. About one in four products contained a chemical that contradicted a package claim.

Phthalates and parabens are endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). They raise concern because some EDCs can interfere with hormone signaling. Hormones help regulate far more than reproduction; they influence metabolism, bone health, sleep, mood and many other body systems. Other detected compounds were classified as potential carcinogens, skin sensitizers or reproductive and developmental toxicants.

Still, a hazard is not the same as a personal health diagnosis. Whether a chemical creates harm depends on its amount, how often a person is exposed, the route of exposure and individual factors. This study did not measure participants’ exposures, test health outcomes or prove that a particular product causes disease.

What it does show is a significant transparency problem: a label may accurately list intentionally added ingredients while failing to reveal contaminants, impurities, breakdown products or chemicals that entered during manufacturing, storage or packaging.

Why this matters over a lifetime of exposure

Most of us use several personal care products each day. The FDA estimates that people use six to 12 cosmetic products daily. Add cleaning products, and the opportunities for repeated exposure pile up quickly.

That is why the findings deserve attention, especially for anyone trying to create a lower-exposure home.

The study does not tell us which individual product is safe or unsafe; a future report is expected to include brand names and specific items. Nor can its results be assumed to represent every product sold in the United States.

But it does show that ingredient-list-based ratings and certifications have limits. If an undisclosed chemical is present, even the most determined label reader may never see it.

Practical ways to reduce the unknowns

Start by simplifying your routine. A shorter list of products means fewer sources of fragrance blends, preservatives and other chemical mixtures. This is particularly useful for items you apply repeatedly or over large areas of skin, such as lotion, body wash and hair products.

When possible, choose fragrance-free products rather than products simply labeled “unscented.” “Unscented” can still mean a fragrance was added to cover another odor. And remember that “natural,” “organic” and “non-toxic” are not guarantees that a finished product has been comprehensively tested for every contaminant.

For cleaners, use the amount directed rather than assuming more is better. Ventilate the room, avoid mixing products and consider simpler products for routine jobs when they work well for you.

But this study makes one thing clear: labels are a starting point, not a complete chemical inventory.

Until finished products are more routinely tested, the best strategy is to reduce needless product clutter, favor transparent companies and keep expectations for “clean” claims grounded in what they can — and cannot — promise.
