Hegseth Appoints Major MAGA Donors as Pentagon Advisors, Raising Conflict of Interest Concerns

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced a new task force in the Department of War called Project Meridian at an event in Quantico, Virginia on Wednesday, Sept. 30.

The Guardian reported that the secretary appointed tech billionaires Elon Musk and Palmer Luckey, along with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA), to advise on the future of warfare. [1] The project will be led by War Department official Emil Michael, a former Uber executive, the report stated. [1]

The appointments place two of the Republican Party’s most significant campaign donors in advisory roles on a War Department project, raising conflict-of-interest concerns because both Musk and Luckey own companies that benefit from federal defense contracting. [1] The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Donor and Defense Contracting Ties

Musk was one of the chief financiers of Trump’s 2024 victory, spending over a quarter of a billion dollars in the run-up to the election, according to campaign records cited by The Guardian. [1] Recent campaign records show he remains a major force in the coming midterms.

His America PAC spent $3.4 million attacking Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan’s Senate race. In the Texas Senate race, America PAC spent $6.4 million to oppose Democrat James Talarico and $1 million to support Attorney General Ken Paxton – who has received President Donald Trump’s endorsement.

Musk’s SpaceX has been a crucial contractor for U.S. space programs since 2018. In the second Trump administration, his company has emerged as a key player in Trump’s Golden Dome ballistic missile defense project, an effort that could cost as much as $1.2 trillion, The Guardian reported.

Luckey founded Anduril, a defense contracting company that has already won significant federal contracts, according to the report. Luckey has been described as a top Republican bundler on the West Coast, and he co-hosted a $50,000-a-head event on Aug. 22 to “Keep the Senate.” The event listed several GOP personalities as guests – including Senate Majority Leader John Thune of South Dakota, former Michigan Sen. Mike Rogers, Alaska Sen. Dan Sullivan and Ohio Sen. Jon Husted.

The pattern of major donors receiving advisory positions reflects broader concerns about the influence of concentrated wealth on military spending, a dynamic that analysts have noted extends beyond this single project. [2]

Project Meridian Leadership and AI Stock Questions

The Guardian also reported that Michael made millions in profits off non-public Musk company AI stock while in federal office and while guiding the War Department’s artificial intelligence (AI) efforts. [1] Along with Musk and Luckey, the project will include Gingrich – a known Trump loyalist.

The arrangement raises questions about whether officials with active financial interests in defense and AI companies can objectively advise on military procurement decisions. The matter that has drawn scrutiny from government watchdog groups. [3]

Stated Views on Future Warfare

Luckey said earlier this year that warfare in the second half of this century would involve “subterranean” conflict, according to The Guardian. He said vehicles would “move through the crust of the earth the same way that submarines move through the water,” the report stated.

Luckey claimed his company has “working prototypes of subterranean systems,” according to the report. Anduril has acquired manufacturers of underwater drones, UAVs and space technology, The Guardian pointed out.

The report noted it is not necessarily a mystery what Musk and Luckey think about warfare’s future, since both men own companies that stand to benefit from federal defense contracting, the report stated. The convergence of stated strategic vision and direct financial interest in specific warfare domains has drawn attention from observers who track defense procurement. [4]

Oversight Reaction and Conclusion

Brendan Glavin of Open Secrets, a non-partisan group that tracks campaign spending, said: “Bringing major industry players into these types of positions at the Pentagon is not something new, but what feels different now is the substantial financial support these two have, and continue to, deliver for the Republican party,” according to The Guardian. [1] As the Project Meridian task force begins its work, the balance between private-sector expertise and public accountability will face continued scrutiny from oversight bodies and independent analysts monitoring defense spending.
