Term of the Week: War of 1812
Fought between 1812 and 1815, the War of 1812 began over British violations of American maritime rights, such as the seizure of American merchant vessels and cargo, and forcing American merchant sailors to serve in the British navy. Many historians refer to the war as America’s second war for independence.
During the war, American forces attacked Canadian towns, which prompted the British to retaliate by setting fire to the White House and other government buildings in Washington, D.C. Despite many setbacks, American naval forces often outperformed their British counterparts. The most notable American triumph came at the Battle of New Orleans under General Andrew Jackson—fought ironically two weeks after the peace treaty had been signed, before word of it reached the armies.
In the end, the War of 1812 concluded without a clear winner, a reality reflected in the peace terms. The Treaty of Ghent (signed in Ghent, Belgium) officially ended the conflict and restored relations between the United States and Britain to what they had been before the war, with both nations agreeing to return all captured lands.
