SEATTLE, WA (3-minute read) — An early morning attempted carjacking in Seattle’s Belltown neighborhood turned violent when a legally armed man defended himself by shooting two suspects who tried to steal his vehicle.
Seattle police responded to the 2200 block of 1st Avenue around 3:30 a.m. after reports of gunfire. Officers found one suspect at the scene suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was given medical aid and transported to Harborview Medical Center in serious condition, where he remains under armed guard.
According to investigators, the intended victim had parked his sports car when a white sedan pulled up nearby. Four masked individuals were inside. After a brief encounter, two of them exited the vehicle brandishing firearms and attempted to carjack him.
Fearing for his life, the intended victim, who holds a valid concealed carry license, drew his own firearm and fired several shots. One suspect collapsed at the scene while the others fled.
Shortly afterward, another suspect with gunshot injuries was dropped off at Harborview Medical Center. That suspect is also in serious condition and under armed supervision. The sedan used in the crime left the hospital before law enforcement could intercept it.
Police detained the intended victim and questioned him at Seattle Police Headquarters. After cooperating fully with detectives, he was released.
The remaining suspects are still at large, and the Seattle Police Robbery Unit is continuing the investigation. Evidence was collected at the scene and witness statements were taken to help build a clearer picture of the events.
Concealed Carry and Urban Self-Defense
This case brings attention to the challenges legally armed citizens face when navigating dangerous encounters in urban settings. Concealed carriers are often forced to make split-second decisions that may save their lives but require legal scrutiny afterward. Knowing the law, maintaining awareness of surroundings, and being mentally prepared for high-stress situations are critical components of responsible concealed carry.
Safety Tip: If you carry a concealed firearm, stay vigilant in transitional spaces like parking lots and driveways, where many attacks occur. Always be aware of your surroundings and mentally rehearse how you would respond to a threat.
