Bank of America (BofA) has long claimed it does not discriminate against conservatives, but mounting testimonies from high-profile figures and many others tell a different story.

Despite BofA’s insistence that it “welcomes conservatives” and operates without a “political litmus test,” the evidence suggests otherwise. Many of those who spoke out were debanked – denied access to financial services – allegedly due to their political affiliations. Retired Gen. Michael Flynn and constitutional scholar Dr. John Eastman are among the victims.

Flynn took to X to share his story, revealing that he and his wife lost their accounts with BofA despite having a near-perfect credit score and a decades-long history of timely payments. “They dropped us without warning,” Flynn wrote, calling BofA’s denials “total b******t.” The former national security advisor ultimately called on others to “dump [the bank] and use a credit union instead.”

Eastman, a senior fellow at the Claremont Institute, shared his story of how he and his wife were debanked after almost four decades with BofA. He wrote: “Why, pray tell, did you cancel my and my wife’s accounts after I had been a customer for nearly 40 years? And why did you refuse to tell me why?”

These accounts have prompted Republican lawmakers to take action. With Rep. James Comer (R-KY) and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) leading investigations into these practices, the truth about BofA’s alleged anti-conservative bias may soon come to light.

Congress investigates anti-conservative bias in banking

Comer, chairman of the House Oversight Committee (HOC), confirmed that his committee is investigating allegations of political discrimination by major financial institutions. He added that the HOC is exploring whether these actions are tied to banks’ environmental, social and governance (ESG) policies.

Scott, who chairs the Senate Banking Committee, has decried the “unacceptable” practice of debanking as “un-American.” He announced a Feb. 5 hearing to investigate the issue. “Every legal business deserves to be treated the same regardless of their political beliefs,” the senator said in a statement.

While the issue of debanking has been a simmering controversy for years, but it gained renewed attention when President Donald Trump virtually addressed the 2025 World Economic Forum in Davos. During his remarks, Trump directly called out BofA CEO Brian Moynihan, urging him to “start opening [his bank] to conservatives.”

“Many conservatives complain that the banks are not allowing them to do business within the bank, and that included a place called BofA,” Trump said. Trump’s comments were a stark departure from the otherwise cordial tone of the event, and they underscored a growing concern among conservatives that financial institutions are systematically sidelining them. BofA spokesperson Bill Halldin quickly dismissed the president’s claims.

“We serve more than 70 million clients. We welcome conservatives and have no political litmus test,” Haldin said. But the testimonies of those who have been debanked paint a different picture.

While the bank continues to deny any wrongdoing, the testimonies of Flynn, Eastman and others suggest a troubling pattern of discrimination. The investigations led by Comer and Scott could finally expose the extent of BofA’s alleged anti-conservative bias.
