People travel worldwide to see interesting artifacts and experience the beauty of nature in new places. While there are great locations to explore abroad, it is unfortunate to spend years casting the net wide for destination adventure only to miss what’s right in front of us. A well-traveled person from the USA once shared, “It took me nearly my entire life to realize that there is no place on earth more worthy of praise than my own backyard.” So go explore, spend tranquil time in nature and visit vibrant cities, but never pass up opportunities to experience adventures close to home.
Here are three exciting adventures in the USA that await you this springtime or summer:
- Holland, Michigan – during Tulip Time: Early May is an awesome time of year to visit this beautiful city that “springs” to life with its famous Tulip Time Festival (May 2 – 11, 2025) An annual event since 1929, the festival has “grown” by epic proportions to proudly showcases millions of tulips. The event not only marks the arrival of this delightful season of the year but provides opportunities to celebrate. Enjoy authentic Dutch musical and dance performances, a carnival, parades, fireworks and more. Of course, exploring Holland at any time of the year is spectacular. Until Mid-October, one may tour Windmill Island Gardens and De Zwaan, an authentic working Dutch windmill. To increase the adventure, visit Nelis’ Dutch Village to step back in time. Year-round, come downtown to shop in the historic village to support the creative arts.
- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – the Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival: the city of brotherly love is not only celebrated as the birthplace of our nation, but it is also known for its vibrant cultural scene. Not to be missed is the Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival (June 20 through August 31, 2025), an annual occurrence situated in historic Franklin Square. This popular summertime event transforms the park into a place of enchantment with its immersive lantern displays including an iconic 200-foot-long dragon illuminated by thousands of LED’s. Since its 2016 debut, visitors from around the world are delighted by the lighted works of art and enjoy choreographed fountain light shows, dramatic live performances, and Asian and American classic cuisine.
- Newport, Rhode Island – during Newport’s Oyster & Chowder festival: It’s always enjoyable to visit Newport anytime of the year to experience its commanding coastline, Ocean Drive, Cliff Walk, high-society mansions, art & museums, entertainment and nightlife and more. Spring and summer are especially appealing for outdoor recreation, beaches, sailing and watersports. This year (May 17 to 18th ) marks the return of Newport’s Oyster & Chowder Festival held on the historic waterfront at Bowen’s Wharf. Indulge in ocean-fresh oysters featuring 75 oyster farms across the state. Sample award winning chowders, lobster rolls, and restaurant quality coastal cuisine while enjoying live music, signature cocktails, and sites and sounds of Newport’s scenic waterfront.
Destination adventure
Adventure is not confined to distant lands nor is it measured by how many miles we travel. Rather, true adventure lies in exploring unique places that pique your interest, move you, and make living worthwhile. In the words of Eleanor Roosevelt, “The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.” Why not do so here at home?
