Foreign nationals accounted for 79% of train theft arrests in Britain in 2025, police data show

According to the British Transport Police, the figures, obtained by the Center for Migration Control (CMC), show that foreign nationals made up 79% of arrests for theft on trains in 2025 and approximately 40% of all railway-related arrests across England, Wales and Scotland. Overall, foreign nationals were involved in 37.7% of the 9,771 arrests recorded by British Transport Police during the period.
CMC said the data indicate that migrants are disproportionately represented in several offense categories despite comprising a minority of the population. In addition to theft, the group said foreign nationals accounted for 40% of arrests related to drug offenses, 37% of sexual offense arrests and 36% of violent crime arrests on the rail network.
“Of the 9,771 arrests in England, Wales and Scotland, nearly 3,700 were foreign nationals,” the think tank said on X. “We have imported a huge problem.”

CMC urges British government to follow America’s “red list”
These figures have returned immigration and public safety to the center of political debate.
Immigration and public safety returned to the center of political debate this week after figures showing a high proportion of foreign nationals arrested on Britain’s rail network prompted sharp criticism from migration-focused advocacy groups.
Robert Bates, research director at the CMC, told GB News that immigration policies have contributed to a “crime wave” on British trains and public transport.
“Immigrants are vastly overrepresented in arrest figures from British Transport Police, particularly when it comes to theft,” Bates said. “Keeping Brits safe is the number one priority of the government, yet under the Tories and Labor, they have continued to let in millions of migrants who commit terrible crimes against the native population.”
Bates also pointed to broader arrest figures compiled by the CMC through Freedom of Information requests, claiming that foreign nationals were arrested at a rate of roughly one every three minutes nationwide last year. “They have made our trains unsafe,” he said, calling on the government to “end immigration and begin a program of mass deportations to protect the British people.”
As part of its policy recommendations, the CMC urged the government to follow the example of the U.S. by introducing a “red list” of countries whose nationals would be barred from obtaining British visas. The group also called for changes to legislation that would make any foreign national convicted of a crime automatically liable for deportation, alongside stricter enforcement of removals.
Similar views were echoed by Harrison Pitt, senior policy fellow at Restore Britain, who argued that the U.K. should adopt a more restrictive, tiered immigration system. “The fact that we already have problems of our own is no reason to import the problems of the world,” Pitt said.
He suggested that countries whose nationals are overrepresented in crime statistics should be prohibited from sending further migrants to the United Kingdom. “The safety of Britain’s host population ought to matter more than the hurt feelings of foreigners with no natural right to be here,” Pitt added.
