Gender-confused arsonist arrested following failed firebombing of Michigan GOP office
- Zayn Edward Arcand, a 19-year-old who identifies as “genderfluid,” was arrested for attempting to firebomb the Dickinson County Republican Committee (DCRC) headquarters in Michigan on July 12. Surveillance footage captured the failed attack.
- Arcand threw a makeshift Molotov cocktail (a rag-stuffed glass bottle) at the building but failed to ignite it. A second unlit device was found nearby. He later confessed, claiming the attack was meant to “send a message against corruption.”
- Arcand faces two felony charges – arson and manufacturing an explosive device – with bail set at $15,000. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for August.
- Michigan GOP Chairman Jim Runestad and others condemned the act as left-wing extremism, comparing it to past violent incidents like the 2017 Scalise shooting and 2020 BLM riots. They emphasized the need for stringent prosecution to deter future attacks.
- The incident reflects escalating political violence in the U.S., with warnings about the normalization of intimidation tactics. Building owners and officials questioned political motivations but expressed relief no one was hurt.
A gender-confused arsonist has been arrested after his failed attempt to fire-bomb the headquarters of a committee under the Republican Party of Michigan.
On Monday, July 14, the Iron Mountain Police Department (IMPD) announced the arrest of 19-year-old Zayn Edward Arcand. The perpetrator who identifies as “genderfluid” was captured on surveillance footage in the process of failing to ignite a rag stuffed into a glass bottle on the afternoon of Saturday, July 12.
Arcand threw the bottle at the building, which hosts the Dickinson County Republican Committee (DCRC) headquarters, before fleeing on foot. Fortunately, this did not cause significant damage – though a second unlit device was found in the parking lot. IMPD officers later arrested Arcand at his home on the same day he did the crime.
The gender-confused suspect later admitted to the crime, alongside crafting makeshift Molotov cocktails in his driveway to “send a message against corruption.” He was charged with two felonies – arson and manufacturing an explosive device – and his bail was set at $15,000.
The Left’s violent extremism goes unchecked
The incident involving Arcand underscores a broader trend of politically motivated violence in the United States. It echoes previous left-wing extremism during the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests and riots, and the 2017 shooting of Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA). Michigan GOP Chairman Jim Runestad condemned Arcand as a “liberal Antifa scumbag” in a social media post. He added that the 19-year-old’s attacks reflect the Left’s “intolerance of any view that doesn’t adhere to their dogma.” Runestad later told Michigan Advance that “this kind of violent extremist action has got to be made an example of.”
Izzy Lyman, a former county commissioner in the Great Lakes State, also denounced Arcand as a “pathetic, yoga-pants-wearing Antifa-wannabe.” She nevertheless reiterated the “need to remain vigilant, unintimidated, and supportive of law enforcement – as these attacks by radicalized vigilantes will likely continue.”
The DCRC said the failure of the attack stemmed from Arcand’s “incompetence,” with Chairwoman Angela Hall reiterating their non-violent stance and continued occupation of the building. Meanwhile, building owners Ray and Barb Broullire expressed relief that no one was injured but questioned whether the attack was politically targeted.
Historically, political violence in America has often surged during periods of deep polarization, from the 1850s clashes over slavery to the 1970s leftist bombings. Legal experts warn that failure to prosecute such acts aggressively risks normalizing intimidation tactics. Arcand, who gave only monosyllabic answers during his arraignment, faces a preliminary hearing in August.
With tensions escalating ahead of the 2026 midterm election, this failed attack serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of civil discourse. It also highlights the consequences of ideology overriding the rule of law.
