Homan vows LEGAL ACTION against officials of sanctuary jurisdictions defying federal immigration laws

  • Border czar Tom Homan warns state and local officials, including Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell, that obstructing federal immigration enforcement could lead to DOJ investigations and criminal charges.
  • The Trump administration is escalating efforts to pressure sanctuary cities, including cutting federal funding and targeting jurisdictions like San Francisco and Portland, despite past court setbacks.
  • Homan singled out Nashville for resisting ICE operations, planning a personal visit and accusing O’Connell of potential legal violations for obstructing federal enforcement.
  • While Homan pushes Republicans to support Trump’s immigration bill (focused on border security and deportations), senators like Rick Scott and Ron Johnson express skepticism about its viability.
  • Courts have blocked funding cuts to sanctuary cities, ruling them unconstitutional. But the DOJ remains committed to enforcing the administration’s hardline policies, setting up further clashes.

Border czar Tom Homan is escalating the Trump administration’s fight against sanctuary jurisdictions, warning state and local officials that obstructing federal immigration enforcement could lead to criminal prosecution.

In a recent interview, Homan singled out Nashville, Tennessee Mayor Freddie O’Connell as potentially facing a Department of Justice (DOJ) probe. He highlighted arrests of judges and lawmakers accused of harboring illegal immigrants. The administration’s hardline stance signals a renewed push to enforce immigration laws, even if it means legal battles with defiant local governments.

The border czar’s remarks come as the Trump administration intensifies efforts to pressure sanctuary cities and states into compliance. Homan, a former ICE director, argues that sanctuary policies endanger public safety by shielding criminal illegal aliens from deportation.

Earlier, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to identify and potentially cut funding to jurisdictions that refuse to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The move follows years of legal clashes between the federal government and liberal strongholds like San Francisco and Portland, where courts have repeatedly blocked attempts to withhold funds. O’Connell is the latest target of federal scrutiny, with Homan suggesting that the Nashville mayor could be under DOJ investigation for allegedly obstructing ICE operations. O’Connell’s office has yet to address the border czar’s claims publicly.

Homan also announced plans to visit Nashville personally, signaling a direct confrontation with local leaders. The Music City has long resisted federal immigration enforcement, mirroring policies in other Democratic-led municipalities.

“It’s quite simple,” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt during a press briefing. “Obey the law, respect the law and don’t obstruct federal immigration officials and law enforcement officials when they are simply trying to remove public safety threats from our nation’s communities.”

GOP lawmakers divided over immigration bill

While Homan urged Republicans to unite behind Trump’s proposed immigration bill dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill,” internal divisions remain. Senators Rick Scott of Florida and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin have voiced skepticism, with Johnson claiming the legislation lacks Senate support. The bill seeks massive funding for border security, including expanded detention facilities and stricter deportation measures.

Homan framed the issue as a mandate from voters, arguing that border security was a cornerstone of Trump’s 2016 and 2024 campaigns. “The American people demanded this,” he said. “There’s no downside to removing criminal aliens.”

Despite the administration’s threats, sanctuary jurisdictions have successfully fought funding cuts in court. Last week, a federal judge blocked an attempt to withhold grants from 16 cities, ruling the move unconstitutional.

Senior District Judge William Orrick, who previously struck down similar efforts during Trump’s first term, warned that withholding funds creates “irreparable harm” by destabilizing local budgets and eroding trust in government. The DOJ, however, remains undeterred. Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove has been tasked with enforcing the executive order, setting the stage for more legal battles.

The Trump administration’s latest offensive against sanctuary cities marks a defining battle in the immigration debate. With Homan leading the charge, federal officials are prepared to pursue criminal charges against defiant local leaders—even as courts continue to limit their leverage.
