Illegal immigrant from Dominican Republic ARRESTED for drug and weapon trafficking at taxpayer-funded migrant shelter
- A Dominican illegal immigrant named Leonardo Andujar Sanchez was arrested at a taxpayer-funded “migrant hotel” in Suffolk County for weapon and drug trafficking.
- During a search of the shelter, authorities found a loaded AR-15 tactical rifle, three large-capacity rifle magazines and approximately 5 kilograms of fentanyl with an estimated street value of over $1 million.
- Sanchez, 28, faces 10 firearm offenses and one count of trafficking in fentanyl. He was ordered held without bail due to the potential for significant harm posed by the combination of lethal drugs, the assault rifle, and the amount of ammunition.
- The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed a detainer on Sanchez, and he is expected to be deported once his criminal charges are resolved.
- The Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities removed Sanchez from the Emergency Assistance Program and expressed its “zero tolerance” stance towards criminal activity in shelters, praising the swift response of the Revere Police Department and other agencies involved in the case.
An illegal immigrant from the Dominican Republic at a taxpayer-funded “migrant hotel” has been arrested on serious charges of weapon and drug trafficking.
According to the details released by the Revere Police Department (RPD) on Jan. 3, detectives from the Criminal Investigation Division and Special Investigations Unit, along with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, conducted a search in a state-run emergency shelter under the Emergency Family Shelter (EA) program at Quality Inn in Suffolk County. The group obtained a warrant on Dec. 27.
Inside the room, they discovered a loaded AR-15 tactical rifle along with three large-capacity rifle magazines, one of which was loaded with .556 rounds. Additionally, the search uncovered approximately five kilograms of fentanyl, with an estimated street value exceeding $1 million, as well as three large-capacity rifle magazines, one of which was loaded. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration claimed that the amount of fentanyl seized could potentially kill roughly 2.5 million people.
“This individual endangered occupants of the hotel, on-site workers, public safety personnel and the community at large,” Revere Police Chief David J. Callahan said. “His arrest underscores our commitment to work tirelessly to protect our community from those dealing deadly Fentanyl and possessing illegal firearms.”
Leonardo Andujar Sanchez, a 28-year-old Dominican national, was apprehended and charged with 10 firearm offenses and one count of trafficking in fentanyl that same day. Sanchez, who entered the U.S. illegally last year, was ordered held without bail, citing the potential for significant harm due to the combination of lethal drugs, the assault rifle and the amount of ammunition.
“Given the potential for harm due to the lethality and amount of fentanyl together with the AR-15 and the amount of ammunition together with his lack of ties to the community, there are no conditions that would ensure the safety of the community,” Judge Jane Prince wrote in her order for pretrial detention.
Moreover, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed a detainer on Andujar Sanchez and it is expected that he will be deported once his criminal charges are resolved. The case is set to continue with a probable cause hearing scheduled for Feb. 3. (Related: Illegal immigrants self-deporting ahead of Trump’s return to the White House.)
Sanchez removed from Emergency Assistance Program
The Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities, which oversees the EA program, expressed its “zero tolerance” stance towards criminal activity in shelters. They confirmed that Sanchez had been terminated from the EA system and that federal immigration officials had lodged a detainer.
“We took immediate action to terminate this individual from the EA system, and we confirmed with federal immigration officials that they have lodged a detainer,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “We’re grateful to the Revere Police Department and Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office for their swift response.”
Meanwhile, Revere Mayor Patrick M. Keefe Jr. praised the police department for their work.
“We are proud of the tireless work of our officers to keep illegal guns and drugs off our streets and build trust in our neighborhoods,” Keefe said. “This arrest is the result of solid police work and cross-agency collaboration. It’s a reflection of the City of Revere’s steadfast commitment to community policing and to protect all of our residents.”
