What’s in Store for 2026 Medicare Part D Plans?
Starting January 1, 2026, the standard benefit structure for Medicare Part D (drug coverage) will change—but some things, like the discontinuation of the Donut Hole— will stay the same. Learn more about these updates to get a better understanding of prescription drug coverage as a whole.
2026 Part D Deductibles & Cost-sharing
Next year, Medicare Part D plans include up to a $615 deductible. This means you’ll pay the full cost of your prescriptions until you’ve spent $615 out of pocket—unless your drug plan has a lower deductible or your prescription is exempt. The deductible is the first stage of drug coverage.
After meeting the deductible, the Initial Coverage phase begins. During this phase, you’re resonsible for portion of your drug costs until you reach the out-of-pocket threshold.
Out-of-Pocket Threshold Increase
In 2026, the out-of-pocket threshold is $2,100. This is a $100 increase from last year. Once you reach this limit, you move into the Catastrophic Coverage phase.
Since the Donut Hole (aka Coverage Gap) remains eliminated, Catastrophic Coverage is the final coverage phase. At this point, you’ll pay $0 for covered medications for the rest of the year.
Medicare Prescription Payment Plans Auto-Renew
Another interesting update is the continuation of the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan (MPPP), which automatically renews for beneficiaries who are already enrolled. This program allows you to spread out your prescription drug costs over the year instead of paying all at once at the pharmacy.
Unless you actively opt out, you’ll be re-enrolled each year. This reduces paperwork while helping beneficiaries manage healthcare costs more predictably
Putting it All Together
The 2026 Medicare Part D updates offer more clarity and protection, especially for those who rely on multiple or costly medications. While the $615 Medicare deductible may seem high, some plans may offer a lower deductible amount. The continued elimination of the Donut Hole and the promise of $0 copays during the Catastrophic Coverage phase provide peace of mind.
Whether you’re currently enrolled in a Medicare drug plan or considering one for next year, be sure to review your plan’s drug formulary (list of covered drugs), review costs, and confirm that your prescriptions are covered. Not all plans are the same, so details matter!
