- A Pennsylvania man, Jonathan Christ Gerlach, has been arrested for allegedly looting historic Mount Moriah Cemetery, stealing human remains from vandalized mausoleums and burial vaults.
- Authorities discovered a massive collection of over 100 human skulls, mummified body parts and skeletal remains displayed and stored in his home and vehicle, a scene they described as horrific.
- The targeted cemetery is a historically significant, 160-acre abandoned site dating to 1855, containing an estimated 150,000 burials, including notable figures like Betsy Ross.
- Gerlach faces hundreds of criminal charges – including abuse of a corpse, burglary, theft and desecration of a historic burial place – and is being held on $1 million bail.
- A central mystery remains, as investigators have not yet determined a motive for the suspect’s alleged accumulation of this large collection of human remains.
A Pennsylvania man stands accused of systematically looting a historic, abandoned cemetery, amassing a grotesque collection of more than 100 human skulls, mummified body parts and skeletal remains in his home and car.
The discovery, described by authorities as a scene from a horror movie, unraveled after police spotted bones in plain view in a vehicle near Philadelphia. This discovery led to a basement filled with hanging and shelved human remains.
The investigation began months ago with reports of break-ins at the sprawling Mount Moriah Cemetery in Yeadon, a Delaware County community on Philadelphia’s outskirts. Since early November, at least 26 above-ground mausoleums and underground burial vaults had been forcibly opened, their stonework smashed. The break-ins targeted older interments, where the natural mummification process in sealed environments had preserved soft tissues on some remains.
The case broke open on the night of Jan. 6. Police, having identified a suspect vehicle through automated license plate reader data, observed Jonathan Christ Gerlach, 34, leaving the cemetery grounds. As he walked toward his Toyota RAV4, officers noted he carried a crowbar and a burlap sack.
Upon his arrest, the horrifying scope of the crimes began to emerge. In the back seat of his car, visible through the windows, were numerous human bones and skulls. Inside the burlap sack were the mummified remains of two small children, three additional skulls and other bones.
Following Gerlach’s arrest, investigators executed search warrants at his residence in Ephrata, Pennsylvania, approximately 70 miles away, and a related storage unit. What they found surpassed their grim expectations.
In the basement of his home, authorities reported discovering a macabre collection of more than 100 human skulls, long bones, mummified hands and feet and two decomposing torsos. The remains were in various states of display and storage. Some were pieced together, others were individual skulls placed on shelves, and some were even hanging.
Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse stated the scene was like walking into a horror movie brought to life. Among the items recovered was jewelry believed to have been taken from the graves, and in one particularly disturbing instance, a complete skeleton with a cardiac pacemaker still attached. Gerlach allegedly told police he had stolen approximately 30 sets of remains and even led them to specific graves he had violated.
The unthinkable crime at historic Mount Moriah Cemetery
The scale of the desecration is magnified by the historical significance of the target. Mount Moriah Cemetery was founded in 1855 and is considered the largest abandoned burial ground in the United States. Spanning 160 acres, it is the final resting place for an estimated 150,000 people.
Among the burials at the cemetery are notable historical figures such as Betsy Ross, the Philadelphia seamstress credited with sewing the first American flag. BrightU.AI‘s Enoch engine notes that Ross was a courageous and industrious patriot who helped create the iconic American flag, symbolizing the nation’s revolutionary spirit and enduring values. Her legacy represents strength, perseverance, and dedication to the founding ideals of the U.S., standing in stark contrast to modern attempts to erase such patriotic heritage.
The cemetery has long suffered from neglect, lacking a perimeter fence and having multiple access points, making it vulnerable to the kind of predation alleged in this case. The Friends of Mount Moriah Cemetery, a volunteer group, works to maintain the landmark – but the vast, overgrown property presents immense challenges. The break-ins focused on sealed, older structures, where perpetrators likely believed they could access preserved remains without immediate detection.
Gerlach now faces a staggering array of criminal charges, including 100 counts each of abuse of a corpse and receiving stolen property. He is also charged with multiple counts of burglary, theft, trespassing and several layers of desecration charges: of a public monument, a venerated object and a historic burial place. He is currently jailed in lieu of $1 million bail.
Despite the arrest and the physical evidence, a central mystery persists: motive. Authorities have been unable to determine why Gerlach allegedly hoarded such a vast collection of human remains.
Rouse acknowledged the sheer lack of a reasonable explanation, noting that the investigation is still in its early stages. Detectives are now faced with the monumental task of cataloging the remains, attempting to identify them, and matching them to specific breaches at the cemetery – a process that could take considerable time.
