Tell the Department of Labor to Return to Commonsense Rules that Make In-Home Elder Care Affordable and Widely Available
In 2013, the Obama administration changed the rules to limit long-standing exemptions for home companions and live-in caregivers under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). This change made it harder and more expensive for seniors to remain at home with the help of trusted caregivers for basic daily tasks, such as meals, light cleaning, and companionship.
Now, the Department of Labor is asking the public whether they should return to the commonsense rules that existed for nearly 40 years.
Tell the Department of Labor to reverse the Obama-era rule and restore the exemptions for companionship and live-in services!
Spotlight on Citizen Advocacy
Last summer, AMAC member Nancy Overman made history by testifying before Congress at the House Ways and Means Committee field hearing in Las Vegas.
Nancy is not a politician. She’s a retired volunteer manager and grandmother. She faced lawmakers, friend and foe, and shared how President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill would give seniors, families, and small business owners the relief they desperately need.

American of the Week: Albert Bierstadt
Albert Bierstadt (1830–1902) was a German-born American painter renowned for his sweeping landscapes of the American West. Born in Germany, his family moved to the United States when he was two years old. When in his early 20s, Beirstadt returned to Germany to study painting in Dusseldorf and then spent four years traveling through Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. Upon his return to the United States, he became part of the Hudson River School (a mid-19th century American art movement) and traveled widely in the American West in search of inspiring scenery.
Bierstadt painted enormous canvases in his New York studio, based on sketches from his western journeys. While his sketches have freshness and spontaneity, his finished works impressed audiences with their scale and grandeur. Bierstadt often exaggerated details to heighten drama and he used vivid greens, icy blues, and misty mountain hues.
“In the years just after the Civil War, most of the U.S. population lived east of the Mississippi River. Few had seen the expanses of western lands. Bierstadt’s large-scale, dramatic paintings inspired settlers and tourists to explore the vastness of their country. Bierstadt’s landscapes also engendered a new reverence for the American landscape and injected ideas of preservation, conservation, and stewardship into the idea of Manifest Destiny. His landscapes later factored into the creation of the national parks and the National Park Service.” (U.S. National Park Service)

Marxism, Socialism, and Communism
Learn about the horrors of communist regimes like the Soviet Union and China, and the rise of Cultural Marxism fueling today’s social and political tensions. In Hillsdale College’s six-part documentary series Marxism, Socialism, and Communism, professors discuss how Marxist ideas have shaped modern America—and give us the tools to understand and oppose their influence on our culture and politics.
Quote of the Week
“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn.”
— John Muir
