After a mission that was supposed to last just one week turned into a nearly 10-month odyssey, NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore, 62, and Suni Williams, 59, finally returned to Earth on Tuesday.

The duo, along with fellow astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov, splashed down safely in the Gulf of America off the coast of Tallahassee, Florida, aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule. The dramatic rescue mission, orchestrated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, marked the end of a saga that had become mired in technical failures and political controversy.

The astronauts’ journey began in June 2024 when they launched aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft for what was intended to be a brief test flight to the International Space Station (ISS). However, a series of malfunctions, including helium leaks and thruster issues, left the Starliner unfit for their return. NASA and Boeing decided to send the spacecraft back to Earth unmanned, leaving Wilmore and Williams stranded on the ISS.

A rescue mission delayed

SpaceX, which has become a cornerstone of NASA’s commercial crew program, stepped in to bring the astronauts home. Elon Musk, SpaceX’s founder, has publicly criticized the Biden administration for delaying the rescue mission, claiming it was postponed for political reasons. “We definitely offered to return the astronauts earlier,” Musk said in a recent interview. “The astronauts were only supposed to be there for eight days, and they’ve been there for almost ten months. That doesn’t make any sense.”

Musk alleged that the Biden administration rejected SpaceX’s initial rescue proposal in September 2024, fearing a potential disaster ahead of the November election. President Donald Trump, who has been vocal about the issue, accused Biden of abandoning the astronauts. “The most incompetent president in our history has allowed that to happen to you,” Trump said in a message to the astronauts earlier this month.

A triumphant return

The Crew Dragon capsule, named Dragon Freedom, undocked from the ISS early Tuesday morning and began its 17-hour journey back to Earth. As it re-entered the atmosphere, traveling at 17,500 miles per hour, the capsule’s heat shield glowed red-hot before four parachutes deployed, slowing its descent to a gentle 16 miles per hour. The capsule splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico at approximately 5:57 p.m. EST, greeted by SpaceX recovery ships and even a school of dolphins.

“On behalf of SpaceX, welcome home,” mission control radioed to the crew. “What a ride,” replied Hague, the capsule’s commander. The astronauts, grinning from ear to ear, were helped out of the capsule and into wheelchairs—standard procedure for those readjusting to gravity after prolonged spaceflight.

A productive stay despite being unplanned

During their extended stay on the ISS, Wilmore and Williams conducted around 150 experiments, logging approximately 900 hours of research that will contribute to future space exploration. “The work we do on the International Space Station benefits the nation, benefits people on Earth, and are the building blocks for going back to the moon and to Mars,” said Joel Montalbano, NASA’s deputy associate administrator for space operations.

The astronauts’ 286-day stay ranks as the sixth-longest continuous space mission in history, just behind astronaut Peggy Whitson’s 289-day record. Despite the challenges, Wilmore and Williams maintained their composure, even as their ordeal became a political flashpoint.

The safe return of Wilmore, Williams, Hague, and Gorbunov is a testament to the resilience of the astronauts and the ingenuity of SpaceX. While the mission highlighted the risks of space travel and the complexities of international collaboration, it also underscored the importance of private-sector innovation in advancing human exploration.
