• President Donald Trump refused to sign a joint G7 statement urging de-escalation between Israel and Iran, objecting to language calling for civilian protection and nuclear oversight in Iran.
  • Trump reiterated his demand for a total halt to Iran’s uranium enrichment and emphasized his administration’s priority of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
  • At the summit in Alberta, Trump proposed reinstating Russia into the G7, returning it to the G8, arguing it was a “very big mistake” to remove Russia after the 2014 Crimea annexation.
  • Trump also floated the idea of expanding the G7 to include China, saying he supported broader dialogue even with authoritarian powers like Russia and China.
  • Trump’s proposals were met with resistance from other G7 leaders, who defended the group’s current democratic makeup and expressed concern about undermining unity on global security issues.

President Donald Trump has declined to sign a joint G7 statement urging de-escalation in the rapidly intensifying conflict between Israel and Iran.

The draft declaration, which affirmed the right of both sides to protect civilians and endorsed international oversight of Iran’s nuclear facilities, had been widely expected to receive unanimous backing at the summit in Alberta, Canada. The document had been carefully crafted to reflect growing fears that cross-border attacks between Israel and Iran could spiral into a wider Middle Eastern war.

However, the Trump administration opted out at the last moment during the annual G7 summit on June 16. Trump, who has taken a hardline stance on Iran, is demanding a complete halt to uranium enrichment and has continued to present himself as one of Israel’s staunchest allies.

Moreover, the White House emphasized that Trump’s top priority is preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

“Under the strong leadership of President Trump, the United States is back to leading the effort to restore peace around the world. President Trump will continue to work towards ensuring Iran cannot obtain a nuclear weapon,” a White House source said.

Trump pushes for Russia and China to join G7, raising eyebrows at global summit

Trump’s divergence from the joint position extended beyond the Israel-Iran conflict.

During opening remarks of the G7 summit alongside Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump stunned fellow leaders by suggesting Russia should be invited back into the group, from which it was expelled in 2014 following its annexation of Crimea. He claimed that it was a “very big mistake” to kick Russia out, adding that Russian President Vladimir Putin was “very insulted” by the move. He also floated the idea of China eventually joining the group, calling it “not a bad idea.”

Trump suggested the G7 should return to being the G8 and floated the idea of a G9 that includes China, a communist state, alongside Russia, an authoritarian regime currently waging war in Ukraine. (Related: G7 and EU to track and sanction trade of Russian diamonds.)

“The G7 used to be the G8. Barack Obama and a person named Trudeau didn’t want to have Russia in,” Trump said, referring to Justin Trudeau, who was elected Canadian prime minister the year after Russia was removed from the G8. “I think you wouldn’t have a war right now if you had Russia in, and you wouldn’t have a war right now if Trump were president four years ago. They threw Russia out, which I claimed was a very big mistake, even though I wasn’t in politics then.”

When asked whether China should also be considered for inclusion, Trump responded, “It’s not a bad idea. I don’t mind that if somebody wants to see just China coming in.” He argued that the G7 should be a space for open dialogue among global powers even those in conflict with the West. “Putin speaks to me. He doesn’t speak to anybody else. He doesn’t want to talk because he was very insulted when he got thrown out of the G8, as I would be, as you would be, as anybody would be,” he said.

The comments were quickly rebuffed by other leaders. A spokesman for U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he was “happy with the make-up” of the current G7. European officials were similarly cool to the suggestion, with sources indicating it could further strain consensus on matters of security and sanctions.
