President Donald Trump has nominated former National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, who was abruptly ousted from his White House post on May 1, to serve as the next U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations (UN).

Waltz, a Florida Republican and former Green Beret, has long been a vocal advocate for aggressive U.S. foreign policy. As a congressman, he pushed for deeper military involvement in Ukraine, criticizing the Biden administration for a lack of assertiveness. His hardline stance aligns with Trump’s “America First” approach.

However, he was embroiled in a high-profile security breach in March. The Atlantic’s editor-in-chief was accidentally added to a private Signal group chat that included Waltz, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director John Ratcliffe, where officials discussed potential military strikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen. The administration insisted no classified information was shared, but the incident raised concerns about operational security, which later on, led to Waltz’s dismissal, along with other National Security Council (NSC) staffers.

Despite that, the president still nominated Waltz as the next U.S. Ambassador to the UN just hours after the dismissal publicly circulated.

“I am pleased to announce that I will be nominating Mike Waltz to be the next United States Ambassador to the United Nations,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that day. “From his time in uniform on the battlefield, in Congress and as my national security advisor, Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our nation’s interests first. I know he will do the same in his new role.”

Marco Rubio to become national security advisor while leading State Department

Trump also revealed that Secretary of State Marco Rubio will temporarily assume the duties of national security advisor while continuing to lead the Department of State. The president framed the reshuffling as part of his broader mission to “Make America, and the World, SAFE AGAIN.”

“In the interim, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will serve as national security advisor, while continuing his strong leadership at the State Department. Together, we will continue to fight tirelessly to Make America, and the World, SAFE AGAIN. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump continued in his post on Truth Social.

Rubio is set to make history as the first person since Henry Kissinger to simultaneously lead the State Department and serve as national security advisor, following the announcement. Kissinger, who passed away in November 2023 at the age of 100, was a dominant figure in U.S. foreign policy, first appointed as national security advisor in 1969 before assuming the State Department’s top job in the second term of former President Richard Nixon. His dual role underscored his unparalleled influence in shaping Cold War diplomacy, including his pivotal role in Vietnam peace negotiations.

While several officials, including Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice, have held both roles at different points in their careers, no one has done so concurrently since Kissinger, who served as both secretary of State and national security advisor under Nixon from September 1973 to November 1975.

Rubio’s expanded responsibilities add to his already substantial portfolio. In addition to leading the State Department, he has been serving as acting administrator for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and as acting archivist at the National Archives and Records Administration.
