Halloween being what it is…They dressed up as dinosaurs, sheep, cats, king crabs and salmon, frogs, ghosts, witches, and costumes that plainly made sense to them.
All around the country last week, we saw “No Kings” protests, a kind of rallying cry against a fake villain, since there is little else to protest – borders closed, drug traffickers being pursued, illegal aliens being deported.
It was a grand, theatrical, wildly acted out complaint about federal laws being methodically, consistently enforced, after a long hiatus of non-enforcement.
This desperate effort for attention by the left, if entertaining, is embarrassing. The energy comes from a deep well of ideological vanity, a desperate minority trying to keep alive a fiction, that America is terrible – more terrible with safety, prosperity and restored greatness. This sad crowd thought the world revolved around them.
It puts me in mind of how half the world lost their heads when a man named Ptolemy – who was sure the sun, planets and universe revolved around earth – was disproved by a Polish astronomer named Copernicus, who pointed out that the planets revolved around the sun, and we were just a speck in a vast, universe.
This disappointed lot of people. The equivalent of mass protests erupted, because Ptolemy’s long promoted, almost worshiped, but untrue storyline – in our case, that federal immigration and drug laws do not matter – turned out to be false.
Turns out the sun does matter, and enforcing the laws does have value. We live in a heliocentric, not earth-centered system. We are not the center of the universe.
To watch these self-indulgent, increasingly unhinged protests by those with nothing better to do, many not working, others hankering for 1960s-style riots – all of whom have been conditioned to hate Donald Trump – is like watching kids threaten hold their breathe until blue, determined to pass out and make us feel bad, if they have to clean their room, do homework, not break the rules – adolescent.
The way I see it, if they want to get their costumes on, grab their angry banners, signs, flags, and bullhorns, get into the streets to declare the Earth is really the sun, or is flat, or that the sun rises in the west, or that boys are girls, children “furries,” borders not borders, everything illegal is legal, that cows have a right to jump over the moon, and that we have a king, so be it.
But here is a little secret. Cows do not fly, the sun does not revolve around the Earth, borders do matter, and we do not have a king.
That said, Halloween being what it is, enjoy the frivolity of frivolous protest, hate with gusto the leaders who keep you safe, deride who you please – because you have that right – and please hang your costumes over on the left, near Ptolemy’s. Thank you.
