Analyst: Ukraine’s attack on Kursk IMPOSSIBLE without U.S. support
An analyst claims that Ukraine’s attack in the western Russian region of Kursk would be impossible without the backing of the United States.
Retired Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatkowski, a former analyst for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), expounded on this claim during an interview with Sputnik News. The DOD and U.S. Department of State were reportedly unaware of Kyiv’s plans to attack and have denied any involvement. But Kwiatkowski is skeptical of this.
“All Ukrainian military activities – especially long-planned ones – utilize U.S. surveillance, intelligence and reconnaissance assistance. The Kursk invasion qualifies here. The weapons systems themselves included U.S. and NATO [North Atlantic Treaty Organization] systems, and some of those are operated by U.S. and NATO personnel,” she said.
Bolstering Kwiatkowski’s skepticism were the contradictory messages of mainstream media outlets. CNN reported, citing multiple U.S. officials, that the Ukrainian border incursion caught government officials by surprise. Meanwhile, Bloomberg News said the Biden administration and the European Union “have given their blessing” to Kyiv to attack Kursk.
“I don’t believe Western government officials, like [U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd] Austin, [U.S] Secretary of State [Antony] Blinken or the members of the National Security Council were surprised. While bold, it was destined to be repelled. And it risked and made vulnerable the rest of the [Ukrainian] military and the remainder of Ukraine.”
According to the analyst, the logic of the Kursk incursion fits into the American establishment’s apparent plan “to get Ukraine over with by raising a last bit of billions for the country, making sure the last shipment of arms and cash is sent, and trying to move out of a stasis in Ukraine before the election.”
Kwiatkowski also stressed “the sophistication and secrecy” surrounding the Kursk attack. She noted that it could have been the brainchild of either Blinken and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, or Ukraine’s war cabinet with the help of what she called “Ukro-nationalists.”
Russian officials agree with the analyst’s observations
The analyst also told Sputnik News that Washington’s denial of involvement in the Kursk incursion stems from the disorder in the Biden administration and the uncertainty surrounding Ukraine’s fate as the U.S. presidential election nears.
“It is unlikely that decisions are being made regarding foreign policy in the White House – leaving Blinken, Sullivan and Austin to work it out; none of whom are elected, nor are they particularly intelligent. Their ‘cautious’ approach might mean they thought it might succeed, when clearly it could not,” said Kwiatkowski.
“Or they could be cautious because they have no idea what will happen next in Ukraine in terms of [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelensky and the simmering power struggle in Kyiv. Caution also serves well in vis-a-vis increasing confusion and stasis in Washington, as no one seems to know for sure which player is deciding U.S. foreign policy for the next five months.”
Other Russian officials also concurred with Kwiatkowski’s observations. Alexander Bortnikov, director of the Russian Federal Security Service, said on Aug. 13 that Ukraine carried out the “terrorist attack” in Kursk with the West’s support.
Maj. Gen. Apti Alaudinov, commander of the Akhmat Special Forces (formally the 141st Special Motorized Regiment), also noted on the same day that American top brass developed the plan of the Kursk attack. He particularly pointed to a large number of foreign mercenaries participating in Ukraine’s military operations.
