Biden’s Education Department has allocated more than $1 billion in grants to public schools to promote DEI PROGRAMS
- The Biden administration’s Department of Education has allocated more than $1 billion to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) grants across 42 states and Washington, D.C., since 2021.
- DEI grant money is used largely to fund consultants and administrative training programs, often at the expense of direct student benefits.
- There are concerns about the impact of DEI programs on students’ academic performance, particularly as the U.S. public education system’s global ranking falls to 12th place.
- The incoming administration under Secretary nominee Linda McMahon has signaled a movement away from DEI and towards learning-centered education policies.
- Families, teachers and citizens are calling for changes in the Department of Education’s priorities, demanding accountability and emphasizing the importance of academic performance over non-essential programs.
A new report by Parents Defending Education (PDE) has revealed that the Department of Education of President Joe Biden’s administration has spent over $1 billion on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) grants aimed at promoting racial bias in hiring, programming and mental health training in public schools.
PDE researchers uncovered $1,002,522,304 in taxpayer money spent on at least 229 DEI grants across 42 states and Washington, D.C. since 2021. Around $490 million was spent on DEI-focused hiring programs, $343 million for “general” DEI programs and $170 million for mental health training and re-training rooted in DEI principles. (Related: Department of Education was WEAPONIZED under Biden to attack, fine and bankrupt religious schools across America.)
The research found examples where school districts allocated large sums of money to consultants for a single training day. For instance, Ypsilanti Community Schools in Michigan spent $19,500 on a consultant for one day of professional development centered around “culturally responsive” teaching. The school district even gave another $19,250 for copies of the consultant’s book.
Montgomery County Schools in North Carolina received a $21.5 million grant that was funneled towards professional training for instructors on “equitable instructional and disciplinary practices.”
In Pennsylvania, the School District of Philadelphia received nearly $4 million in grant funding for a restorative justice program. It received another $1.2 million grant for training 40 elementary school teachers in “enacting equity-centered education,” and another $306,209 grant for teaching counselors “trauma-informed, antiracist social-emotional learning.”
DEI spending is not improving students’ academic performance
PDE noted that the crux of the issue is the fact that the Education Department has spent over $1 billion in taxpayer dollars on programs that have done little to improve academic performance.
“The only people or groups to benefit from the enormous amount of grant funding are the universities, administrators and DEI consultants, at the expense of children’s education,” noted PDE researcher Rhyen Staley, noting that America’s public education system of the U.S. ranks 12th globally in terms of development.
“Over $1 billion [have been] squandered on progressive pet projects all while American students’ academic performance continues to plummet,” noted PDE senior advisor Michele Exner.
The incoming Trump administration, led by Secretary-designee Linda McMahon, has signaled a shift in focus toward education that emphasizes learning over political agendas.
