KENOSHA, WI — A Kenosha apartment resident who shot and killed a burglar will not face charges, according to a local media outlet.
The incident occurred at the Wood Creek apartments near 15th Street and 30th Avenue on Friday, June 21. Police reported that Izerion Cooper, 24, and Dieonte Lee, 20, initially burgled the apartment, stealing a firearm among other items. However, around 4:25 a.m., Cooper realized he had forgotten some of his belongings at the apartment and decided to return.
Upon Cooper’s return, the apartment tenant had come back home. A physical altercation ensued between Cooper and the tenant, with Cooper being armed during the struggle. During the fight, the tenant shot and killed Cooper.
The circumstances of the shooting are under investigation, but I would be curious as to whether the tenant had another firearm for protection or managed to disarm Cooper during the fight before shooting him. The Kenosha County District Attorney’s Office and the Kenosha Police Department have determined that the tenant acted within his rights of self-defense, and no homicide-related charges will be filed.
Meanwhile, Dieonte Lee, who participated in the initial burglary, has been arrested and charged with burglary using a dangerous weapon and theft of a firearm.
This incident underscores the importance of home defense and the legal protections afforded to residents defending themselves against intruders.
