A shooting in Tuscaloosa County resulted in one death in an apparent act of self-defense, with the aggressor shot after injuring another man. The case is under review by the Tuscaloosa County Grand Jury.

TUSCALOOSA COUNTY, AL (5-minute read) — In the early hours of Saturday, a shooting in Tuscaloosa County left one man dead in what authorities have determined to be an act of self-defense. Deputies responded to the 2000 block of Stardust Drive around 3:14 a.m. on June 29, discovering two men who had been shot.

A 23-year-old man was rushed to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover. The other individual, identified as 51-year-old Reggie Coverson of Tuscaloosa, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following a thorough investigation by the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit (TVCU) and a review by the District Attorney’s Office, it was concluded that Coverson was the initial aggressor in the incident. Evidence indicated that Coverson had shot the 23-year-old, prompting a third man to intervene and shoot Coverson in self-defense.

At this time, no charges have been filed against the man who shot Coverson. However, the Tuscaloosa County Grand Jury will conduct a review of the case to ensure all aspects are fully examined.
