Cancer is not an abstract word in my family.
I’ve lost my grandfather and one uncle to lung cancer, and another uncle to liver cancer. So when I see research revisiting old cancer questions with new tools and better understanding, I pay attention.
That doesn’t mean I’m looking for miracle cures.
In fact, I think that’s where conversations about cancer and natural health can go wrong. Families facing cancer don’t need false hope. They need honest hope, based on better science. They need options that are studied carefully and used responsibly.
That’s exactly why the vitamin C and cancer story is so interesting.
For decades, it was either treated like a cure-all or dismissed almost completely by mainstream medicine.
But the truth now looks more complicated than either side admitted, and is coming to light again, thanks to Justin Stebbing, Professor of Biomedical Sciences, Anglia Ruskin University.
The mistake that buried vitamin C
In The Conversation, Prof. Stebbing revisited the history of the vitamin C cancer story and brought us up to date…
The vitamin C cancer story goes back to the 1970s, when Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling and Scottish doctor Ewan Cameron reported that very high doses of vitamin C helped people with advanced cancer live longer and feel better.
But then the Mayo Clinic tested high-dose vitamin C in two large trials and found no benefit.
For many doctors, that ended the conversation. But one important difference between those studies that would later become impossible to ignore…
Pauling and Cameron had used vitamin C through a vein first, then tablets. The Mayo trials used only vitamin C pills.
That may sound like a small detail. But it’s anything but…
That’s because your gut can absorb only so much vitamin C from tablets at a time. Once you reach a certain point, taking more by mouth doesn’t keep raising blood levels in the same dramatic way.
IV vitamin C is different…
When vitamin C is given intravenously, it bypasses the gut and can reach blood concentrations far higher than pills ever could. At those levels, vitamin C may stop acting like a simple antioxidant and start behaving more like an experimental cancer drug.
That’s the part of the story that scientists are finally revisiting.
When vitamin C flips roles
Most of us think of vitamin C as an immune-supporting antioxidant.
And at normal dietary levels, that’s exactly how it works. Vitamin C helps protect cells from oxidative stress, supports collagen production, helps with wound healing and plays a role in immune defense.
That’s why I’ve written before about the triple miracle of vitamin C and why this vitamin deserves attention long before you ever get sick.
But high-dose IV vitamin C is a lot more intense…
At extremely high concentrations, especially around tumors, vitamin C may help generate hydrogen peroxide. That’s a reactive substance that can damage cells.
Healthy cells usually have stronger defense systems to clean up that kind of oxidative stress.
But cancer cells are often already under strain. They grow quickly. They may live in low-oxygen areas. Their energy systems are stressed. Their cleanup systems can be stretched thin.
So when high-dose IV vitamin C creates an extra oxidative hit, some cancer cells may be pushed over the edge.
Put simply, vitamin C doesn’t “nourish” the body into defeating cancer. Instead, pharmacologic doses of IV vitamin C may exploit a weakness in cancer cells.
The vitamin C you still need every day
The National Cancer Institute says laboratory studies suggest high levels of vitamin C may kill cancer cells, and some small studies in people have looked at IV vitamin C alone or alongside other treatments. Some reported better quality of life or fewer side effects. Others showed no clear anticancer effect.
Mayo Clinic makes the same point: IV vitamin C has different effects than vitamin C taken by mouth, and researchers are studying whether it might improve treatment effectiveness or reduce side effects.
So even though IV vitamin C is not yet an established cancer treatment, the research is promising enough to continue.
However, vitamin C remains an essential nutrient that people normally obtain from foods and supplements.
But researchers say most of us aren’t getting nearly enough vitamin C in our diets to potentially ward off not only cancer, but heart disease and stroke — as well as common conditions that lead to them, such as high blood pressure, chronic inflammation, poor immune response and atherosclerosis.
Scientists in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition say the recommended daily allowance for vitamin C should increase from 75 milligrams for women and 90 for men to 200 for all adults. That would be in addition to five servings of fruits and vegetables a day.

Is vitamin C proven to cure cancer?
No. Vitamin C has not been proven to cure cancer. Large trials using high-dose vitamin C pills did not show benefit, and there are still no large controlled clinical trials proving that IV vitamin C alone cures cancer. Current research is studying whether IV vitamin C may support certain cancer treatments or reduce side effects.
Why is IV vitamin C different from vitamin C pills?
Vitamin C taken by mouth is limited by gut absorption. After a certain point, taking more does not raise blood levels much higher. IV vitamin C bypasses digestion and can reach much higher concentrations in the blood, which may produce different biological effects than food or supplements.
How might high-dose IV vitamin C affect cancer cells?

What foods are good sources of vitamin C?
Good vitamin C foods include oranges, grapefruit, strawberries, kiwi, bell peppers, broccoli, tomatoes, leafy greens and potatoes. These foods provide more than vitamin C alone. They also offer fiber and plant compounds that support overall health, which is why food should remain the foundation.
